It is unknown when Joseph Dangerfield arrived in South Australia but he was resident in the McLaren Vale district for more than 20 years about 1850 until 1871.

Joseph Dangerfield was noted in the press of 7 March 1851 as a farmer of McLaren Vale when he was named with others as supporting John Stephens in a Declaration of Confidence. On 29 September 1851 he appeared with others before the Willunga Local Court for splitting timber without a licence. He was listed in 1853 as of Section 508, 18 acres with a house at McLaren Vale village; and in 1856 of Section 497, Willunga, 80 acres. In 1862 he was a witness at an inquest into the death of a Peter Wheeler held at the house of William Vinecombe ‘near the banks of the Onkaparinga’, Noarlunga. Dangerfield and Vinecombe were berated for ‘culpable carelessness and indifference to a fellow-being …’. In August 1866 his son Henry won a prize in a ploughing match at McLaren Vale in the Boy’s Class, and again in 1867 at McLaren Vale. Also in 1867, Joseph was granted a Timber Licence for three months. The following year, there was a dispute with a neighbour over Joseph’s pigs; a subsequent fire threatened the neighbour’s house. By 1871 he was living at Magpie Creek, Rochester (Clare district). In 1889 he was farming scrub sections near Ninnes for a Milling Company and was described as ‘in poor circumstances’.

Joseph Dangerfield died at Kadina in 1904, followed by his wife in 1917. Both are buried in the Kadina Cemetery, memorialised by their descendants in 2019.
