Richard John Eden was born in Willunga on 15 October 1884, youngest son of quarryman George Eden and his wife Mary (nee Finch).
He married Martha Elizabeth Hunt on 25 July 1914, with Rev J Hicks of Willunga officiating. Martha, born in June 1884, was the second child and eldest daughter of Edward and Mary Hunt of Willunga.
They had three children:
1. George Edward John Eden, b 1915
2. Stanley Gilbert Eden, b 1921
3. Keith James Finch Eden, b 1922
Richard (Dick) was a driver. At the time of his wedding, he worked for Cobb & Co who gave him a chiming clock as a wedding gift. He had many jobs including with the SA Brewing Company. He travelled around South Australia with his work. At the time of his death, he was working part-time for Rofe & Co.
Richard Eden died on 16 October 1934 following a depressive episode which resulted in him throwing himself under a tram in the city.
Martha Eden suffered depression after the birth of her children and spent most of her remaining life in Glenside hospital where she died on 1 February 1947.
Richard and Marth Eden are buried in the Cheltenham Cemetery, Adelaide.
