James Holman was born in 1827 and he was the third son of John Holman (1795-1853) and Melicent Hodge (1795-1850). He arrived, aged 12 years, with parents and siblings from Crowan, Cornwall on 7 June 1839 aboard Sir Charles Forbes at Port Adelaide from Liverpool. According to the 1841 census James Holman (14 years) was living in Willunga and he lived in Willunga for more than a decade (1841-1853).
James Holman (1827-1903) married Susanna Atkinson (1828-1894) on 9 Sept 1852 at Willunga. Farmer at Willunga, Bald Hills and Napperby. By 1853 James and Susanna Holman had moved to Bald Hills near Yankalilla where they lived for three decades (perhaps until after 1883) but certainly by 1887 they had moved to Napperby near Crystal Brook. They had eleven children (five sons and six daughters):

Mary Louisa (23/07/1860-08/09/1890) m. Henry Young
Hannah (Annie) (04/04/1862-1893) died aged 31 years, unmarried
Ada (20/09/1863-23/09/1889) died aged 26 years, unmarried
Philippa (07/03/1865-25/06/1895) died aged 30 years, unmarried
James (26/02/1867-29/06/1894) died aged 17 years, unmarried
Robert John (28/10/1869-13/04/1942) m. Eliza Rosanna Hawkins on 04/01/1894.
James Holman, aged 76 years, died on 1 May 1903 at his son’s residence (Nelshaby) at Napperby in the mid north of South Australia. He was buried in the Crystal Brook cemetery.
