Susanna Holman (nee Atkinson) was born on 17 August 1828 and was baptized at St Mary and St Peter’s church in Waddingham, Lincolnshire, England. She was the youngest daughter of Robert Atkinson (1774-1832) and Susanna Fish (1788-1832) of Hayes Farm, Snitterby. She was only 4 when her parents died. She was Church of England.

Susanna travelled with her four brothers - William, Robert, Thomas and Joseph - and her sister Bridget, some with their families, to South Australia on board Singapore from London. They arrived at Holdfast Bay on 12 November 1839. Susanna was then 11 years old and she lived in Willunga during the 1840s.

Susanna Atkinson married James Holman (1827-1903) on 9 September 1852 at Willunga. By 1853 James and Susanna Holman had moved to Bald Hills near Yankalilla where they lived for some years, perhaps until after 1883. By 1887 they had moved to Napperby near Crystal Brook. They had eleven children:

  • William (1853-1936) married Agnes Stewart Carmichael on 25 July 1883.
  • Bridget Catherine (1854-1890) married Thomas Smith on 3 January 1883.
  • Thomas Atkinson (1856-1892) was unmarried and died aged 36 years.
  • Susanna Millicent (1858-1890) married Robert Bain Carmichael on 30 March 1887.
  • James (1859-1860) died as an infant.
  • Mary Louisa (1860-1890) married Henry Young.
  • Hannah (Annie) (1862-1893) was unmarried and died aged 31 years.
  • Ada (1863-1889) was unmarried and died aged 26 years.
  • Philippa (1865-1895) was unmarried and died aged 30 years.
  • James (1867-1894) was unmarried and died aged 17 years.
  • Robert John (1869-1942) married Eliza Rosanna Hawkins on 4 January 1894.

Susanna Holman (nee Atkinson) died on 31 May 1894 at Napperby near Crystal Brook in South Australia and is buried in the Crystal Brook cemetery.
