Henry William How, known as William, was the son of William Crosby How (1824-1864) and Jane (nee Gregg or Guy) (1832-1917). Henry William was born in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, England in 1852 and was the eldest of 6 children. Occasionally the surname was spelled as Howe.

Henry William, aged 3, arrived at Port Adelaide aboard Mallard on 25 April 1855, with his parents and two oldest siblings. When he was 21, he married Fanny Brooks (1853-1921) on 9 April 1873 at St Stephens Church in Willunga. Henry William and Fanny How had 11 children:

  • Henry Crosby (1875-1941) was born at Aldinga. He married Florence France Ingram and they had three children. They lived at Aldinga until 1928. He died at Mt Gambier.
  • Alice Amelia (1876-1959) was born at Aldinga. She married Frederick Cox (1871-1938) on 30 November 1897 at the residence of Mr Hastwell, Goodwood and they had two children. She died at Aldinga.
  • Alfred Ernest (1878-1954) was born at Aldinga, He married Lillian Ann Uren (1880-1945) on 5 March 1901 in Victoria and they had five children and lived in Victoria. He died at Yarraville, Vic.
  • Lily May (1880-1886) was born and died at Aldinga.
  • Thomas Brooks (1882-1958) was born at Aldinga. He married Lottie Lambden (1885-1952) on 7 November 1906 at Kensington and they had five children. He died at Parkside.
  • Florence Elizabeth (1886-1958) was born at Aldinga and married George William Kelly (1883-1942) on 22 May 1909 at Aldinga. She died at at Vermont, SA.
  • Stanley James (1888-1941) was born at Aldinga and married Alice Maud Jobson (1889-1968) on 7 October 1913 at St Peters. He was a fisherman at Port Willunga and died at Aldinga.
  • Arthur Herbert (“Bert”) (1889-1955) was born at Aldinga. He married Olive Sylvan King (1881-1973) on 15 March 1911 at the Methodist Church, Exeter, SA, and they had four children. The family lived at McLaren Vale and then Meningie. He died at Peake, SA.
  • Lavinia Emma (1892-1976) was born at Aldinga and married William Alexander Cameron (1890-1982) on 15 February 1913 at Norwood. They had two children.
  • William George (1894-1988) was born at Aldinga. He served in World War 1. He married Ibis Unidice Peave Reed (1894-1963) on 22 July 1919 at Vardon Congregational Church, Kings Park, SA, and they had five children. He was a fisherman at Port Willunga. He remarried, to Maisie, and died aged 91 years at Port Willunga.
  • Fanny Brooks (1898-1982) was born at Port Willunga. She married Ernest Orchard Kitto (1896-1964) on 6 September 1927 at Port Willunga and they had one son. She died at St Georges, SA.

Henry William How was a mason at Aldinga, like his father. In 1876 Henry’s tender to erect a fence (guard posts and culverts) was accepted by Aldinga District Council. Henry and Fanny How were regularly charged, and sometimes fined, for failing to send their sons, Arthur, Stanley and William, to school and on occasion were excused through illness and “due to grape picking”.

Henry William How died of chronic gout and 14 years' cerebral haemorrhage on 1 June 1904 aged 52 years and 3 months. He had been an invalid for over 20 years and experienced much suffering. He left his entire estate worth £50 to his widow Fanny. Henry’s widow, Fanny, died, aged 67 years, in November 1921, leaving 10 children to mourn her sad loss. Henry William and Fanny How are buried together at St Ann’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Aldinga.
