William Reed was born in Mawnan, Cornwall, England on 10 April 1794. He was the son of Thomas Reed (1755-1825) and Sarah Harris (1757-1830). William Reed married Jenny Moon (“Jane”) Cock (1798-1866) on 29 February 1822 at St Winnow, Cornwall, England. They lived at St Teath and he was a shoemaker.

William Reed senior (61) and his wife Jane (59) arrived at Port Adelaide on 19 January 1857 aboard Marion from Plymouth. Also on board were his two adult sons - their youngest son, James Reed (20), and William junior (34) with his wife Eliza and four oldest children. Their two adult daughters had arrived in South Australia before their parents and brothers - Agnes aboard Duchess of Northumberland in 1847 and Jane, aboard Coromandel in 1855.

William senior and Jane's children were:

  • William Reed junior (1823-1901) was born at St Veep, Cornwall, England. He married Eliza Prout, aged 21 years, (1826-1906) on 27 June 1847 at Tintagel, Cornwall, England. He died at Willunga and is buried in the Wesleyan Methodist (Uniting) Church Cemetery in Willunga.
  • Agnes Harriet Maria (1827-1910) aged 20 years, arrived aboard Duchess of Northumberland in 1847. She married Michael Maddigan (1819-1886) in 1848 at Kadina and died at the Wallaroo Mines.
  • Jane (1829-1923) was born in Penzance, Cornwall, England. Aged 26 years, she arrived in South Australia aboard Coromandel in 1855. Aged 28 years, she married John Allen (1833-1917) on 12 January 1857 at St Stephens Anglican Church, Willunga. They had five children. Jane died at Willunga and is buried in St Stephens Anglican Cemetery, Willunga.
  • James (1837-1919) was born at St Teath, Cornwall, England. Aged 22 years, he married Elizabeth Chenoweth (1841-1920) on 1 July 1859 at the residence of Edwin John Chenoweth in Willunga. They had ten children. James was a labourer and they lived at Willunga until about 1867 when they moved to Kadina. James died at Kadina.

After Jane’s death in 1866, William, aged 71 years, remarried to Mary Warner ( -1874) on 7 December 1867 at the Primitive Methodist Church at McLaren Flat. In the 1875 Directory, William Reed senior was described as a shoemaker of McLaren Vale and, at the time of his death, as a farmer of McLaren Vale.

William Reed senior, aged 87 years, died on 5 August 1881 at Willunga and is buried in St Stephens Anglican Cemetery, Willunga.
